Discovery Centre News

Book Week is a celebration of children’s literature and plays an important role in bringing children and Australian books together.  Every year, the Children’s Book Council of Australia make a shortlist of fantastic new books by Australian authors and illustrators, published in the previous year.  Books are judged and winners and honour books are announced during Book Week.  All of the shortlisted books are available from the Discovery Centre.

The theme this year is ‘Book an Adventure’, so opens up lots of possibilities for costumes for the Book Week Dress-up Parade.  We love to see all children involved in the Dress-up Parade.  Children can come dressed as their favourite book character, movie character or as part of the theme.

Book Week is being celebrated in our school from Monday 18 to Friday 22 August with the Dress Up Parade being held on Thursday 21 August.

Caring for Our Books

We have so many beautiful new books in our Discovery Centre for our students to borrow!  All students in Prep to year 6 will need to bring a library bag for borrowing.  If your child has lost their bag, please organise another bag for them so that they can borrow regularly.  School library bags are available for purchase from the School Locker.

Please encourage your children to care for our resources.

Here are some ideas to help you out:

  1. Always store your books in a Library bag or reading folder (Plastic bags are really handy and free)
  2. Turn the pages of your book from the top or bottom corner.
  3. Protect your books from the sun and rain.
  4. Always remember to use a bookmark.  No dog ears please!
  5. We must have clean hands when using books.
  6. Remember not to eat or drink while reading books.
  7. Please don’t attempt to repair books yourself.  Books don’t like sticky tape!  Send them to the Discovery Centre to be repaired properly.
  8. Store books in a safe place at home.

Happy Reading!
